How much does it cost to become a member of the Leeds Savage Club?
Membership is £20.00 per year.
What do I get for membership?
You get the opportunity to:
- Work with other artists and gain valuable feedback and inspiration on forums and at writers and sketchers meetings
- Promote your work on the savage’s website and at other public events
- Contribute to all projects that are open for savage members to get involved with (recent projects have included preparing our first exhibition and writing a play for South Leeds Radio)
- Attend exciting social events
- Network with other artists and like minded people
- Have your work considered for the yearly publication
- Contribute to the running of the Savages
- Vote at official meetings
- Stand for board positions at elections (next in 2012).
What is the Round Table?
The round table is a forum on the Savage website that only members have access to. It contains details of current projects that are open to contribution.
How old do I have to be to join the Savages?
We do not currently have opportunities for junior members. Members must be 18 or older.
How often do you meet?
Writers’ and Sketchers’ meets are usually once every two weeks. Other events, such as social events and exhibitions are organised in addition to this.
Can I just come along to the social events?
The Leeds savage Club is an arts club with a social element. People joining should therefore have the intention of improving their writing or sketching by attending writing meets and / or sketching meets. That said, we will not keep a tally of how many meets you go to in order to decide whether or not you can attend social events!
Do I need to bring my own headdress?
No! The modern Leeds Savage Club has not and will not adopt any of the cult or ritual elements of the original Victorian club. These were gimmicks, employed to increase the membership of a failing organisation. The stereotypes and attitudes that their use implies are in no way acceptable to the current Club or its members.
Can I join if I don’t live in Yorkshire?
Yes – however you should be aware that the social events and meets are currently based in Yorkshire, so you may not get as much benefit for your membership as you would if you lived in Yorkshire. You will need to come to one of the meets to join.
Why the membership fees and donations?
Membership fees and donations are used for things necessary for the Leeds Savage Club to function, including the web site, events (like the launch party), consumables (like membership cards, welcome letters, and other paperwork) and insurance when official meetings are held. Remember, we are a non-profit organisation and all our funds go into the running of the club.
I’m no good at writing. Can I still become a member?
By all means – we welcome all writers regardless of their level of experience and confidence. One of the main reasons for joining the Leeds Savage Club is to improve your writing. We hope that, by joining, you will gain a lot of encouragement and motivation to write.
What happens at a meet?
For writing, we meet at the pub. After settling down with our drinks, we read out any work we want to share with the group. This will often be based on a task set in the previous meet, but everyone is welcome to read out any other work they want to share. Then we usually do a light-hearted writing exercise and discuss any issues related to writing that anyone raises. Finally, we set the task for the next meet.
For Sketchers, we normally meet up at a landmark in or around the Leeds Area. We then split off and draw for the next hour and half, before rejoining and normally heading off to the nearest pub to discuss and share our work.
I want to see what a meeting is like before committing. Can I do that?
Yes, you don’t need to be a member to attend meets – however non-members are asked to donate £1.00 at meets.
Do I need to bring my own materials to a sketchers meet?
Yes, we do not supply materials.
Pubs and drinking seem to be mentioned a lot. Is this part of the culture of the Leeds Savage Club?
As well as being an arts club, we do have a social side. Most meets usually take place in a pub and some of us do like a drink or two! However, we all take our work seriously and you can use the Leeds Savage Club to improve and promote your work, whether or not you are interested in the social side.
